100 years ago one of the greatest tenors was born in Stockholm, Nicolai Gedda. He is, with the permission of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the most recorded opera singer, with celebrated recordings through the pass of time. Bach's Matthew's Passion under Klemperer, Verdi's Requiem under Giulini, Mozart's Requiem with Barenboim, Berlioz's Damnation under Pretre... as well as French, Italian, German, Russian songs on discs. Among his almost 100 opera recordings very few people know that he also recorded extracts, and here it is a very rare one, Puccini's Butterfly in German with Anneliese Rothenberger, Hermann Prey and Siegliende Wagner conducted by Giuseppe Patané. The recording sessions took place at the Grunewaldkirche in Berlin from the 30 of October to the 4 of September in 1966 for EMI/Electrola. Here you can hear Gedda as you never heard him before. This is one of my favorite recordings ever. Recorded in 1973 with Gerald Moore at the piano and with the magnificent RIAS Kammerchor these nine Lieder were composed to be sung on evenings between friends.  Even today these duets remain largely unknown, music treasures hidden to the large audiences. Later on they would be joined by soprano Elly Amelling and tenor Peter Schreier to record the trios and quartets, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau would finished the complete Lieder by Schubert.
