Eugenia Moldoveanu: an extraordinary unknown soprano

Eugenia Moldoveanu grew up in Azuga. From the age of 7 she studied piano with Aurel Bobescu, the eldest of the Bobescu brothers. Between 1963 and 1968 she studied singing at the Conservatory of Music in Bucharest. In 1968 she won the first prize at the Sofia competition and was immediately hired by the National Opera in Bucharest where she made her debut singing Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni. In 1970 she won the first prize at the "G. Enescu" International Competitions in Bucharest and in Toulouse in France. In 1973 she won the grand prize at the Madama Butterfly competition in Tokyo, a prize she received from Maria Callas, president of the jury. Then she began a beautiful career, which took her to all the great stages of the world.

Moldoveanu sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, the Hamburg Opera, Covent Garden in London, the Arena in Verona, the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, the Vienna State Opera; alongside artists such as Carlo Bergonzi, Renato Bruson, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Alfredo Kraus, , Giuseppe Taddei, Ruggero Raimondi, Katia Ricciarelli, Nicolai Ghiaurov... under the batons of conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, Giuseppe Patanè, Georges Prêtre or Wolfgang Sawallisch. Her repertoire included Don Giovanni, Idomeneo, The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, Traviata, Luisa Miller, Simon Boccanegra, Ernani, Otello, Boheme, Madama Butterfly, Turandot, Gianni Schicchi, Manon Lescaut, Der Freischütz, Carmen, Manon, Năpasta, Oedipus; and from the vocal-symphonic repertoire Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Verdi's Requiem, Brahms, Mozart, Dvorak's "Stabat Mater", Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis".

She retired from the stage at the age of 49. She taught singing at the National University of Music in Bucharest. She was secretary of state at the Ministry of Culture (1994-1996), general director of the Romanian Opera (1993-1995) and parliamentarian on behalf of the PDSR (1996-2001) and PSD (2001-2004). She held the position of Vice-President of the Permanent Delegation of BEx. Central to the PDSR.
