Les pecheurs de perles by Alfredo Kraus and Adriana Maliponte
I grow up listening to this beautiful set that my mother bought in vinyl. In my opinion Kraus is the only one that makes justice to the role. The beauty of his tone when he was young is out of doubt and thanks to him we have this incredible recording made by his own label, Carrillon. The sound is a bit crispy and the stereo is pretty weird with each singer singing in different channels. I tried converting the recording to mono and it sounds much better. Adriana Maliponte is exquisite as always, Sesto Bruscantini deserved more attention as well as Spanish baritone Antonio Campó. Carlo Felice Cillario was just reliable.
Bizet's work on recording: Gedda and Micheau under Dervaux (very nice one), Cotrubas and Vanzo with Pretre, Angelici and Legay conducted by Cluytens, Aler and Hendricks under Plasson (curiously all of them for EMI), Albelo and Rancatore with the direction of Daniel Oren, the most recent with Dubois and Fuchs conducted by Alexander Bloch (very nice set too) and three productions on DVD, the best one, imho, is the one from the Met with Polenzani and Damrau under Gianandrea Noseda. You have a good collection to make your choice. Meanwhile here it is the one by Kraus and Maliponte, very difficult to find. Enjoy it.
