Shirley Verrett - Live at Carnegie Hall January 30, 1965

To talk about Shirley Verrett is synonymous of excellence. New Orleans born, Verrett was an extraordinary mezzosoprano that transitioned to soprano sfogato in the 70s. She had no intention to sing opera at the very beginning but she confessed that when saw Callas singing Norma at the Met she changed her mind. For this recital at the Carnegie Hall she sang Lieder by Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Copland, Spanish songs, old American songs and spirituals with pianist Charles Wadsworth.

  To write about Maria Callas is always a pleasure, to listen to her is shaking your emotions always. Today marks 48 years since we lost her, since we lost the most extraordinary opera singer in history. She always moves your emotions till the edge of the abyss of every character she sang. No matter if she performed it on stage or not. She dug the skin of every character to squeeze the essence of it. I grow up listening opera. My mother was a great fan of Alfredo Kraus and we have all his recordings among many others. In my mother's collection we had Zeani's Puccini Arias, Sutherland's Portrait, an album by Marilyn Horne singing Lieder... and Callas' La Divina and Duets with di Stefano as well as one single with Casta Diva in side A and Mira o Norma in side B with Stignani. Nicolai Gedda - Birthday 100th anniversary

100 years ago one of the greatest tenors was born in Stockholm, Nicolai Gedda. He is, with the permission of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the most recorded opera singer, with celebrated recordings through the pass of time. Bach's Matthew's Passion under Klemperer, Verdi's Requiem under Giulini, Mozart's Requiem with Barenboim, Berlioz's Damnation under Pretre... as well as French, Italian, German, Russian songs on discs. Among his almost 100 opera recordings very few people know that he also recorded extracts, and here it is a very rare one, Puccini's Butterfly in German with Anneliese Rothenberger, Hermann Prey and Siegliende Wagner conducted by Giuseppe Patané. The recording sessions took place at the Grunewaldkirche in Berlin from the 30 of October to the 4 of September in 1966 for EMI/Electrola. Here you can hear Gedda as you never heard him before. Leontina Vaduva Opera Arias

Leontina Vaduva was born in the Romanian city of Rosiile. She attended the Bucharest Conservatory where she studied with Ileana Cotrubas, debuting the role of Manon with the Toulouse Opera in 1987. She received the Lawrence Olivier Opera Award for her marvelous performance of Juliette in Gounod's Romeo et Juliette at Covent Garden in 1994. Her discography includes Rigoletto, Les contes d'Hoffmann and La Bohème.
